Russian pianist Sviatoslov Richter's performance of one of Western civilizations greatest musical Works is no less astounding today that it was when it was first released. Even more amazing is the fact that Richter learned the second book of this musical collection by heart in only one month! His renderings are true to the pieces as they were originally written, before Glenn Gould revolutionized the way they would be played.

Though Richter didn't always enjoy studio recording, he plays for an eternal audience in these immaculate recordings. There are too many wonders to enumerate of what is really meant to be heard, not read about. As an owner of another complete recording that Richter did later, I was struck by the consistency of his overall vision of this music despite different tempi, touches and uses of pedaling in his interpretations. If a listener owned no other J.S.Bach keyboard music than this terrific set there would be no disappointment, just other marvels of Bach's art to contemplate besides. To this listener-pianist, there is no more pure and universal expression of beauty in sound than these compositions, which seem to cover the infinite range of human feelings and thinking.Richter's approach to each pair of preludes and fugues is so natural and unforced, but not stolid either. Please consider this magical music in this sonically excellent re-release from RCA!
Richter is a phenomenal pianist, whatever the repertoire. Listen to these exquisite renderings of Bach's Preludes and Fugues and you'll literally hear the pianist's heart beat in the music. He plays a Bösendorfer which accounts for the darker, less brilliant sound of the instrument, compared to a Steinway. Richter's approach is warm and passionate without being overly emotional. He puts meat and blood on these studies that were intended to promote keyboard instruments tuned in what was then a novel way. Richter's Well-Tempered Clavier tops a short list of recordings that find the humanity in what would otherwise be a clinical performance in the hands of a lesser pianist. A must have for any true music lover. The playing is utopian, but the surroundings for the recording for me were far from ideal. The upshot of having these historic recordings at all was that the outcome seemingly depended on elaborate negotiations involving Richter, Melodyia, BMG, Austria, Bosendorfer,, etc. The locus chosen was a drawing room in the huge Schloss Klessheim outside Vienna. And it sounds like it, with the massive Bosendorfer echoing around a large room. All this seems to have been what the great pianist wanted, so I can live with it all the while wishing the recorded sound was not so grand, so to speak. A UK reviewer also has thoughts about this below. As close to perfect as music gets... I can't add much to what others have said here other than to agree that this is indeed a sublime performance of this monumental work for the keyboard... Richter sustains an ethereal flow from prelude to fugue, from one key to the next, from major to minor, mixing tempos, and providing deeply inspired readings of each section. You get a sense of the intense concentration he sustained over the length of the entire work which extends to four discs. Wow.Listening to these CDs, could we truly be more lucky? Lucky that there lived a genius Bach who coded the divine into musical forms? that Richter's work and genius rendered those forms into musical beauty in the form of this CD? that technicians had the knowledge to construct the marvelous instrument upon which this was performed? and other technicians had the knowledge to record, save, produce, and now allow us to play back this divine gorgeousness? But also, that you and I, the listeners, have the ear, the mind, and the heart to listen to and appreciate this divine artistry? Think of the countless poor souls who will never understand or even care about such music and art...Splendid, beautifully played - so much better than having Glenn Gould hum off key while playing. I love it. It is music that helps me think and clears my mind, lifts my spirits and nourishes my soul.I very much like the performances, and think the sound quality is quite acceptable (although I do wish that Sony would issue a remastered version given the passage of so many years since these CDs first appeared), but I had to return two sets because each had a blemish in the last track on Disc 2 that made that track unplayable. The fact that both sets had a defect in the same track of the same Disc 2 makes me suspicious that there is a manufacturing defect in the current production run, and I wanted to caution buyers to be on the lookout.Richter's interpretation of the Bach Preludes and Fugues is at the opposite pole from that of Glen Gould. Gould's priorities, it seems to me, and I am no expert, were to articulate each voice clearly, to create the definitive demonstration of the most glorious polyphonic music. And he succeeds.Richter often omits to bring out the lower voices and submerges the polyphony. Notwithstanding that, his recording is supremely expressive, joyous, and profound, done with wonderful coloring. All of that and sometimes played faster than I can follow. I love it.People who want perfect up-to-date sound may have to look elsewhere. But I am hooked on this and play it over and over.I know of no better recording of Well Tempered Clavier. This one has both passion and hard technical mastery. It is sharp and engaging. I think this is very rare gift to be able to play like that. All other Well Tempered recordings I have, except for one, are either too didactical - precise maybe but lacking emotion, or too mushy - having some kind of touchy feely things, but not well tempered J.
